Educational Inspection Checklist
A conceptual checklist demonstrating the scope of components reviewed during a standard industrial equipment condition assessment.
1. Identification & Documentation
- Verify crane capacity markings are clearly visible from the floor.
- Check equipment identification tags match documentation.
- Review previous inspection reports and maintenance logs.
- Ensure operating manuals are accessible.
2. Structure & Integrity
- Check main girders and runway beams for visible damage or deformation.
- Look for signs of significant structural corrosion.
- Inspect end carriages, wheel assemblies, and track alignment.
- Check all accessible bolts and fasteners for tightness and presence.
3. Lifting Mechanisms
- Hook: Inspect for wear, deformation, twisting, and verify safety latch springs back firmly.
- Wire Rope: Check for broken wires, kinking, crushing, bird-caging, or internal corrosion.
- Hoist: Listen for abnormal noise from gears, check for oil leaks, and inspect sheaves for wear.
- Brakes: Verify holding power and observe brake pad thickness (where visible).
4. Electrical & Controls
- Test all directional controls (up, down, left, right, forward, reverse) for smooth operation.
- Verify function of the emergency stop button.
- Test upper and lower hoist limit devices carefully.
- Inspect pendant cables for cuts, exposed wires, or strain relief failure.
- Check electrical panels and guards are secure and unbroken.
Follow-up Actions
Upon completing any visual check, all observations of abnormal noise, visible damage, or malfunction should be immediately documented. Defective equipment must be locked out, and the issues must be reported to the appropriate maintenance or engineering supervisor for formal evaluation.
